Princess Teana's Tea Diary

An excerpt from Princess Teana's tea diary. New entries are posted on a regular basis.

Dear Tea Diary,
I met the most wonderful friend today. She's fun, smart and has a smile that makes me feel good. Her name is Elizabeth, and she's very much like the girl reading this book.

Maximus and I were flying in the Shangers Cup and Saucer when we spotted her sitting on the front porch of her house. She wore the largest, most elaborate hat I had ever seen. It was bright red with a wide, wide brim, and it was covered with yellow roses. Bright green polka dot ribbons hung down the back.

Now, I didn't think anyone could possibly be sad wearing a happy hat like that one. But poor Elizabeth had her chin in her hands, and looked as if she'd been crying for hours. We immediately landed the saucer on the front lawn and asked if we could help.

Elizabeth was having a tea party the very next day. Her mother had helped her plan the menu, choose games, decorate and even make the special party hat she was wearing. Everything seemed perfect.

But when Elizabeth talked to her best friend Kathy, she discovered some terrible news. Kathy didn't feel like tea! She didn't like tea with milk, tea with lemon, or tea with sugar. She didn't like hot tea or iced tea or even raspberry tea. Kathy just didn't like tea, so she wasn't coming to the tea party.

Elizabeth put her face in her hands and sobbed, but Max and I looked at each other and smiled. We returned to the saucer and quickly brought out our teapot and cups.

"Elizabeth, a tea party is mostly about being with friends," I said. She looked at me through her tears. "Would you like a cup of tea?"

She nodded. I handed her a cup and she sipped it. Her eyes widened. "That's not tea, that's lemonade."

"Of course," I said. "Now this one."

She sipped. "Apple juice!" Elizabeth's face was happy. "I see! We can have a tea party and have other kinds of drinks too."

"Exactly. Sometimes our friends have different likes and dislikes. But there's always some way to work things out so that everyone can be included."

As we flew away, Elizabeth was skipping along the sidewalk to Kathy's house singing:

Juice for you
And tea for me
See how happy
Friends can be!
