Tea Bears

When Bridget Kelly set sail to America on the RMS Titanic , one of her valuable possessions was a dog-eared teddy bear with a missing eye called Darjeeling. Of course, thankfully, Bridget Kelly survived the sinking of the Titanic and so did her teddy. Years later, when Bridget's daughters were born, they all had their own teddy bears which in Hans and Bridget's household were called tea bears, and the individual names given to them usually had a strong link to the world of tea.

Now, more than 100 years after Bridget's teddy first saw the light of day, new generations of children can meet and get to know the Tea Bears of Teaopolis through stories on the web and planned publishing activities.

In the Princess Teana stories we'll be meeting her family of tea bears who live in a special tea bears picnic area in the secret summer garden of Shangers Castle. Actually, the whereabouts of the garden isn't really a secret because everybody goes there for tea bear picnics - but "secret" makes it sound more exciting.

Professor Tea: "Sleeping Teddy is today's special guest at the picnic"
Peppermint: "What time is she coming?"
Princess Teana: "Why, teatime, of course."

In each story featuring Princess Teana and her tea bears we meet a special teddy bear guest from the real world, a teddy bear who's owned by a human we'll most likely know, like Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Casey Jones, the Fire Chief, the President of the United States and many others from around the globe whose teddy bears from time to time might need a refreshing cup of tea and a little advice on how to help their humans.

Now, here's a message from Princess Teana introducing her special tea bears complete with a short tea bear story:

Dear Reader

My oldest Tea Bear friends are Professor Tea and Lady Oolong. They are a bit grand, to be honest, but I don't mind because my mum is a duchess - so I'm sort of used to it. I have to take very good care of them and make sure they are kept nice and warm.

I also have a young Tea Bear called Peppermint who's great at sport, well, the gentle sort of sports that bears like. He's good at making things, getting lost and cuddles. Typical bear, really.

Two of my other Tea Bears are Darjeeling and Spice. They're almost the opposite of Lady Oolong and Professor Tea. They get into trouble like me and Maximus, but they mean well and they can be really funny. Darjeeling got stuck on top of the flagpole last week. My dad tried all sorts to get him down. Said he couldn't have him on top of the Teaopolis flag, what would happen if a King or Queen happened to come to visit? He said it would be a national disgrace and he had to come down immediately. Maximus offered to climb up and get him, which I thought rather good of him, but Lady Rose wouldn't let him. I didn't think that made sense, as she's always telling him to get more exercise, but when I explained my point of view, I was told to go inside if I couldn't say anything helpful. I wanted to stay, so I kept quiet after that.

My mum wanted to know how Darjeeling ended up on top of the flagpole, but I just shrugged my shoulders. Then she told me I should speak up and be more helpful. You can't win with adults. First I'm told off for saying something, then I'm told off for not saying something. Luckily, Benjamin the butler arrived at that point and undid the rope that takes the flag up and down. As soon as the flag moved, down came Darjeeling. It would have been quite nasty, except Maximus caught him. Only then he wouldn't give him back and I had to chase him round and kick his bottom. He did shout a lot. So did everyone else. Good job a King or Queen didn't arrive while all that was going on. Poor old Darjeeling was quite shaken. I had to give him some Camomile and Honey tea to calm him down. I drank it with him because it is delicious. Thank goodness for Tea Bears. They certainly make life exciting. Well, I'd better stop there for now. See you again soon. Bye.. tea up and smile.

Best wishes
Princess Teana
